This morning I decided to browse an old, favorite stomping ground of mine for Jose Canseco cards, Checkoutmycards.com, to see what I could pick up. If you are a real player collector, eBay really is the way to go. Unfortunately I don’t have time or interest in getting into bidding wars so COMC would have to do.
I ran into a typical problem when looking for cards of the former 1988 M.V.P, there really is nothing new. A crappy Leaf card here, a sad Upper Deck card there …. and that’s really about it. Well, that is until I ran into the card below, released by Famous Fabrics in 2010. I don’t even know where to begin.
I have some really dull Canseco cards in my collection. After 20+ years, you are bound to run into these cards at shows and rinky dink card shops. It is inevitable. However, no “oddball” or unlicensed card looks as bad as the Famous Fabrics card does. For starters … THERE IS NO PHOTOGRAPHS.
Okay, I could forgive the lack of player photos if the card could somehow come up with a theme not just a generic baseball graphic found in some rejected Windows wallpapers website. All these three players were once Athletics. All were Rookie of the Year winners. That’s something, right?
Nope. Instead we get an uber-bland generic color scheme of white and grey with some paint splatter (WTF?) to make the card look, I don’t know …. what the hell was Famous Fabrics going for? Oh, and let’s not forget the worthle$$, tiny pieces of fabric that were likely not even game-used anyway.
The asking price on COMC for this horrible baseball card is $69.00 dollars, believe it or not. I wouldn’t pay more than $3.00 dollars and that’s only because I’d assume the seller would include a Top Loader in the whole deal. At least, I’d hope he would. Then I would at least get something worthwhile out of it.
